The Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems is accepting applications for its summer STARS Program.

The Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems is accepting applications for its summer STARS Program.

STARS, short for STEM Aerospace Research Scholars, is a summer space workshop for high school young women ages 16 and older. The four-day program starts July 19 with a workshop at the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope headquarters in Waimea.

Participants also will tour PISCES headquarters and projects and return to the CFHT facility for an overview on multiwavelength astronomy and search for exoplanets and life in the universe. The program ends with a sunset tour at the summit of Mauna Kea.

STARS started in 2014 to encourage more of Hawaii’s young women to pursue a space career or other field in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Participants receive real-world experience with aerospace technologies and facilities on the Big Island, and learn directly from experts, including the PISCES space team.

Those interested can apply online at www.pacificspacecenter.com. Applications will be accepted until May 20. Space in the program is limited.
